An animated interlude directed by Le Cube for Tom Tykwer’s latest film
A poetic breath inside the cinematic whirlwind of Das Licht—this animated sequence was conceived as a surreal, emotional intermission within Tom Tykwer’s visionary feature. Crafted in collaboration with Le Cube, it channels the timeless spirit of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody through a dreamy lens of 2D cel animation.
Premiered on March 20 2025, Das Licht is the latest work from Tykwer—the acclaimed director behind Run Lola Run, Perfume, and Cloud Atlas. The film follows a young boy undergoing an experimental light-based therapy in the wake of profound loss. As the flickering pulses of a neurological device open portals within his consciousness, he begins a journey of emotional reconnection, where memory, grief, and imagination intertwine.
Our evocative 75 seconds of hand-drawn animation, captures this inward passage—an intimate, symbolic transformation unfolding within a world charged with chaos. It’s a moment where time slows down, and animation becomes pure language: emotional, intuitive, and deeply human.
From rough sketches to the final frame, every detail was built with intention—honoring the music’s weight and the film’s lyrical heartbeat. This is more than a visual interlude; it’s a poetic meditation on healing, perception, and quiet metamorphosis.
